Vendor Politics - All Professions Are Respectable

Ridiculing a person for his profession in a classist manner using cheap invective is unbecoming of National level parties. This is not surprising at all since the citizens are very much aware of the degraded level of vote politics being played in the country. The people look forward to a strong opposition in the parliament as a means to strengthen democracy and not a grouping of people indulging in populism and unruly behaviour.

This is also suggestive of the kind of people that come forward to manage the affairs in India. Well this certainly does not apply to one and all since there are many politicians of unquestionable repute in this country. But it is the proportion that matters, the participants with despicable thoughts, inclined towards corruption and are bound to be inefficient, roost the rule. This augurs bad for the country which is the largest democracy with a highly stable structure.

Resorting to personal jibes in a manner not befitting of seasoned politicians has been a norm lately. The issue based approach does not apply to the politicians in this country. In their overzealous attempt to usurp political power all civilities are kept asunder much to the horror of the common man who is certainly not impressed.

Opprobrium of lowest level are the highlights of the political campaigns. Insidious remarks, lowly vilification and slander marks the election campaign.

Nowhere is there an effort to bring forth issues that relate to the country neither is there an effort to highlight winning policies that the Nation desperately needs to come out of the quagmire of extreme poverty, illiteracy and phenomenal number of social anomalies that prevail.

The meme deriding the "chaiwala" trade of our Prime Minister is nothing but a display of absolute arrogance. People in professions pertaining to small scale economy should not be an object of ridicule. To survive not all citizens of this country would be involved in professions pertaining to economy of high end scales. The instance is nothing but a National disgrace and people behind the episode should be taken to a severe task so that there is no repeat.

The apology does not mitigate the insult that has arisen out of this episode towards a person at an utmost respectable post. And if the instance has emerged from right under the nose of top figures in the party, it certainly would prove to be a negative impact on the outcome of the recent elections to be held.

The ruling polity defines the meme as classist and anti poor and why not. Deriding a profession which appears lowly to some speaks only of an attitude not befitting politicians who could be managing the country in the future or are already doing it.

I think this embarrassing episode should remind politicians where they are heading. Citizens look desperately towards the country managers for solutions that would mitigate tremendous problems and difficulties that the common man is experiencing even after seventy years of independence.

Padmavati - A Case of Surpassing Artistic License?

Well the title does not tells the truth, as the film has not been screened to the public. I have not seen it. May not see it, since I do not see films..often.

Only a handful of people probably journalists and politicians have seen the film. A journo article I was reading in the local Hindi daily was nothing but praise for it. He was privileged enough to have attended the closeted premier.

No one it seems has been able to gauge  the reason behind the eruption of massive protests in Rajasthan as well as all over the country. This keeping political opportunism aside.

The one primary reason that I seem to understand is that the eruption of protests against the film as the Queen - adored by all of us - is being projected on the screen, perhaps relegating her to a commoner status. No one in his right mind would like the personae to be seen dancing or frolicking about like a commoner. This may sound chauvinistic but the sentence bespeaks true emotions of the masses of which I am one. But of what I have heard so far such sequences have been presented in a sanctified manner in the film?

Another reason for the protests could be apprehension that the artistic license could have been crossed over surpassing the limit. Rumours always acerbate issues which is in the case of the film Padmavati.

The media makes matter worse in spite of playing the constructive role of an eye opener and an educator. The puerile debates like questioning the very existence of the honourable queen is itself provoking.

Sometimes Hindu Nationalist or Right bashing appears that Hindus in general are being subjected in guise for a gleeful ridicule. This is the work of pseudo secularist and opportunists with communal bend of mind.

In democracy the right to protest is very much apparent, but violence and threats have no place in a civilised society.  People of this country should adopt a very broad and rationalistic outlook shunning aside old ideologues and dogmas impractical in the contemporary world.

But then there is an audience limit as is the artistic or expressive limit of the authors and creators. If you err by hurting sentiments of people by going recklessly overboard it could result in chaos, loss of life and property and what not.

I hope great director that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is has not erred, and has been circumspect enough in projection on the screen truth nothing but the truth.

Tiger in India: A Species Invasion?

Tiger Pic Mukul Yadav
Species Invasion

Or is it an invasive species? The tiger I mean!

From the cold confines of Siberia in the Palearctic region the tiger migrated into India about ten thousand year back. This happened much after the tectonic plate movement and the submergence into the Asian mainland.

A lot has changed by the tiger migration which have taken place all over Asia. The predator became tertiary carnivore and occupied the top of food chain in many ecosystems. In many cases it has become an indicator species as well. The prevalence in a region of this big cat does augur preservation and protection by the virtue of its indomitable presence. Even the Project Tiger for the conservation of this species in India benefits the whole ecosystem and its elements. Hence all seems to go well by this natural time bound invasion. Moreover it has not displaced the Asiatic Lion which was its precursor having arrived from the Ethiopian Region. The two big cats subscribe to two extremely diverse habitats in India.

Cultural Invasions

Well is this not akin to an invasion similar to that of the Mongols, Moguls and or that by the British? This question deems pertinent as after all we too belonged to the same ecosytem aeons back. But this is not anymore since we have completely alienated ourselves from the natural World and created our own colony on Earth.

The demographic and cultural changes in India brought about by invasions are a major challenge to the country faced with an internecine battle between inherited cultural ethos and the adapted foreign practices and beliefs which will take a long time to naturalise. The division of the country is an example of the effects of disruptive invasions. But this phenomenon will continue to prevail in some form or other, it is our capacity to absorb and integrate that will result in existence in harmony. This virtue will eventually sustain a diverse but unified system which we call our country.

Humans

More than the invasive animal and plant species, humans have managed to colonise the Earth in disastrous proportions, and multiplied to such extent that our survival is slowly being threatened by limitation of natural resources and our own irresponsible usage. This is nowhere more evident elsewhere than in a heavily populated country like ours. Another threats arises from our lifestyle which aggravates the consumption, and not to forget chemical and nuclear weapons of mass destruction. The rapidly evolving strains of deadly microbes is another invasion that is threatening our survival.

A species invasion is understood as that which invades and then rapidly populates in an ecosystem that is not native to it. But this does not necessarily mean the specie is not compatible with  complex web of life and abiotic factors that prevail in the area under conquest. On the contrary the invasive species often propagates unchecked eventually damaging the habitat, disrupting the ecosystem and over powering native species to the detriment of environment. Many species have become by unnatural species invasion triggered by humans. The Dodo is a living example besides rabbits and dogs in Australia.

The Tiger

Invasions are disruptive? Well not always, those which are time bound natural spread of species manage to settle down with ease learn to coexist and eventually become part of the ecosystem - ineradicable and indelible. In case of the tiger this has proven to be the case. The slow spread can be attributed to adaptive changes the animal had to undergo in order to survive under changing weather conditions and the new habitats containing unfamiliar elements.

The tiger conservation in India is not a sentimental or elitist approach as it appears to some. It is downright sensible and practical  approach, keeping in tandem with our Vedic cultural inheritance that makes us realise the value of the environment and those of the elements contained within.

The Battle

After a successful habitation of the subcontinent, the survival of the tiger was insured in India. Hunting as sport was prevalent way back but it did not take a toll of the species. But with the development of modern  weapons hunting turned from sport into an elitist addiction and egotist fascination this proved to be destructive on wide scale. Another factor detrimental to the tiger's survival in India was the vermin concept that the British brought along with them. This resulted in mass destruction of not only the big cats but many other carnivores.

The invasion of agricultural practices became more destructive to the habitats with population explosion in India. Unable to produce food for a rapidly growing populations habitats including the forests all over the country where cleared with fervour and converted into farm land. This also resulted in unchecked settlements into deep recess of remote confines which had been left untouched since aeons. There was no recourse, the country had been checkmated by the population explosion beyond redemption. This is what rabid industrial developments is auguring in the country resulting negative climate change, global warming and pollution of uncontrollable magnitude.

The rapid conversion of habitats, hunting beyond  proportion and urbanisation of settlement sounds like a death knell for the tiger. During or post 19th century the animal's population began to dwindle unchecked. But it was in much later era that realisation dawned upon us of the species imminent extinction.

Battle Continues

The decline in the status of the tiger continued unabated post independence. It was in the sixties that the extreme threat level was acknowledged. The wildlife protection act and the initiation of Project Tiger Conservation Program by the Government of India has augured hope for the hopelessly embattled species on Earth.

Tiger Deaths A Sad Plight of A Beleaguered Animal

With the electrocution of a tigress (Jr. Kankati) at Bandhavgarh another critically endangered species loses number. The worse to happen is that she was in custody of  her cubs totally dependent. This would mean a loss of four big cats. Negligence, misfortune, accident whatever is stated the sad story is that no answer has been found to prevent deliberate electrocution by local poachers near the reserves.

Incidences of ghastly electrocution of this dwindling species is not new yet no solution has been found. The menace continues unabated thanks to burgeoning human population that surrounds reserves in India. Man animal conflict is taking its toll not only in case of big cats but other critically endangered animals as well.  This is a discouraging plight of wildlife conservation in the country.

We have taken over lands after destroying niche habitats in order to survive. This is besides the large number of tracts that are not tilled. Suggestive of bad land use policy unfortunately the issue is not a National imperative. And we continue to overpopulate.

We talk about human rights even in sensitive regions which have constricted beyond regeneration capability.  We do not justify alternate existence/sustenance in order to preserve if the project does not carry sufficient economic leverage. Wilderness is truly battling survival in India.

Is conservation a wash off of our guilt?

It could well be because we have not yet inculcated values that accord rights to other life forms. We are shamelessly a human centric society. On one hand we zealously discuss climate change, environment change etc but our actions are diametrically opposed our efforts are sham.

Not only neglect or disregard for other life forms and nature, our actions, development goals and attitude are totally destructive and devoid of any concern for mother Earth that sustains us. When the rot will be stemmed is anybody's guess.

The spiralling downwards of big cat population continues - Panna, Pench, Sariska, Kanha to name some. Numerous tigers are missing - presumed to have been poached.  Although tigers travel a long distance to find new territories this is a rare occurrence. Many such predators vanish due to poaching, habitat destruction, mismanagement, lethargy and inconsideration especially in reserves which are not in the limelight. The vanishing species dies unsung.

Male tigers rarely switch territories unless until forced to since this may also mean loss of young cubs they have sired. The overtaking male kills them instantly if the female is not able to protect them.  Whence common sense prevails the males do not leave the area they are commanding.

Recently at Kanha National Park a male tiger in the buffer area was electrocuted, purportedly the wire was stretched to kill small game. The unfortunate tiger walked in. Well who knows! Neglect of small crimes leads to more organised, deadly, and concerted efforts.

The poachers got away with minor punishment exposing the legal lacunae that exists whence crime against wild animals is concerned. There seems to be a complete lack of political will in giving the vital elements of our ecosystems their due.

States keep on losing big cats purportedly due to poaching. In spite of all the patrolling and protective measures in place the animal is losing ground. It won't be a surprise if the recent exhilaration of rising numbers turns into deep despondency.

This is not only a conservation challenge, our pride as a Nation is deeply involved. If we fail or falter we will lose face like never before.

None Above The Law

With the conviction of another guru as announced in the recent news, the law of the land has prevailed. Nobody is above the law, even the so called God men with mystical powers and prophetic ascendancy as many claim. The mass following is overpowering and the blessed (sic) assume autocratic powers and eventually commit heinous crime under the garb of the holy.

The religious/ideological zeal created by cults and some sects is able to sway masses into becoming overzealous and fanatical followers. Though many God men have been controversial - it is the followers of some that resort to violence creating a tremendous stress on law and order machinery, disrupting public life and even causing death of innocent.

This problem is not peculiar to India since many such instances have happened overseas as well. The rise in radicalisation or extremism in many countries may not be attributed to mystical God men but nevertheless some local clerics are able to sway their followers using an equally or perhaps more vicious indoctrination. These rabid clerics are no less than God men, perhaps deadlier as they are legalised as head of a place of worship which has large number of followers.

Due to fearful sanctimony that is created around religion or radical beliefs especially that which prevails around places of worship these harbingers of violence escape undetected in the initial stage.

The zeal is impressive and captivating and even the right thinking people are taken in initially. The truth emanates whence lot of damage has been done. Even at this stage political wranglings, fear of the masses, and the uncertainty of outcomes makes law agencies hesitate. Eventually whence the die has been cast action is taken. But by this time extreme damage has been done by radical indoctrination and eventual violence that is emitted by vile sermons and conversations of the wrong kind.

When the matter escalates beyond control it becomes a threat to the Nation itself and sometimes even the integrity of the constitution is challenged. In case of dissent external elements are able to take full advantage of the situation creating further chaos and threat to stability.

This is a warning for India, religious apparatus should never be allowed to enter the system of governance. Zealots should be kept at bay. Policies favouring religious or cultural systems eventually lead to vigilantism or religious autocracy which most often is violent and leads to death of innocent. Such ideological prevalence also threaten the fragile fabric of a diverse nature with many religions and sects flourishing in the country.

Legitimate religious practise, diverse as they may be should be protected as is the duty of the State.

Parochialism : Hindrance to Wildlife Conservation

Crucial wildlife conservation projects are stalled due to parochialism which still persists in United India. Take the case of Asiatic Lion translocation from Gir in Gujarat to Kuno Palpur in Madhya Pradesh.

Known as Asiatic Lion Reintroduction Project the exercise to trans-locate a pride of lions is a Government of India initiative.  According to Wildlife Institute of India the project envisaged fetching the endangered animal out of isolation and prevent extinction due to disease transmission (epidemics), natural disasters, development projects and severe man animal conflicts.

Earlier, before the decimation of the Asiatic Lion (Panthera leo persica) due to excessive hunting and takeover of land, the species was spread out to many parts of Northern and Central India.  Today the lions are restricted to Gir National Park in Gujarat. Nowhere else outside India does the Asiatic Lion survives and its safeguard and conservation has become all the more crucial.

From last remaining population of about twenty two lions the population has grown to more than five hundred animals. This was a commendable conservation effort. But due to paucity of protected area in the last stronghold the predators are roaming in and around human habitations in an area of approximately 20, 000 square kilometers. This movement is a cause of concern to naturalists and conservation fraternity as man animal conflicts could lead to serious consequences for the beleaguered cat.

Palpur Kuno in Madhya Pradesh

After an intense study Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary was found suitable for scientific lion reintroduction - a contingency plan to save the Asiatic Lion from extinction. Taking enough time the State Government with assistance of Central Government the Kuno habitat improvement took place keeping all aspect of the endangered cat's survival. Eventually the habitat with increased pray base was ready for the reintroduction exercise.

Gujarat Government Opposition

The lion reintroduction has so far not taken place due parochialism that prevails. The Gujarat State Government came out with number of  issues related to the habitat and conservation practices in MP.

The Government considers the population of lions as a matter of State pride and heritage. Another contention that was put was that the predators have never been trans-located  successfully. This does not apply to present context as advance scientific means of translocation and rehabilitation in new environment are in practice.  The reintroduction of tigers at Panna and other places speaks contrary to it being a failure. The Government's attitude is nothing but a negative thought which we have still not done away with.

Status

The project is now stalled in a quagmire of legal proceedings, and it seems extrication from this would take a long time if ever. As far as translocation and rehabilitation is concerned we are much better placed with institutional support and backing of advance scientific techniques. The project should be completed as envisaged since conservation is a win win situation for the Nation and the critically endangered animals.

In a surprising turnaround in June 2015 MOEF declared the project as  not viable. This was based on some grounds.

It is up to the Gujarat Government to show a positive attitude and co-operate in the exercise for reintroduction of Asiatic Lions to Palpur Kuno. Wildlife conservation should take prominence since it is the matter of survival for beleaguered animals in India and not that of  heritage of pride.

Saving Indian Wildlife - The Hard Way

If the need arise to kill poachers for heinous wild life crimes in and near our reserves it should be done so without hesitation. A nation that venerates cows should accord equal weight age to other life forms especially those which are highly vulnerable and on the brink of extinction. We are hopeful that our conservation ethos emanating from Vedas will accord more concern for other life forms.

Recently there was a news in an online magazine criticizing shooting down of poachers in Kaziranga National Park which is acclaimed for Rhino conservation listed as vulnerable in IUCN red list. The species is critically endangered in India with most of its habitat lost to  human expansion and greed.  Rhinos are much wanted target of poachers for the value they carry. Albeit this action is taken by those authorized  as a last recourse but then there are no options left in such circumstances.

Obviously the author of the report  does not believe in equating lives of other species with human life. She is not to be blamed since very large section of human society holds no reverence for other life forms, and does not value their life and does not  care for their survival on Earth.

Anyway we are least interested in souls lacking authority and genuine concerns raking controversies for sake of personnel gains pointing anomalies in our systems. Activism should be balanced with concern for all.

This attitude is nothing but encouraging persecution of God's enigmatic creatures desperately making their last stand on a planet of which they are the rightful inheritors as well.

The blame lies on human domination, a prerogative that is merciless on other life forms The destruction of Earth that is taking place more so in the recent times is due our human centered attitude at the cost of creatures big and small and their living space. One day we will also perish if we do not protect habitats and conserve wildlife with absolute regards.

I have noticed on may occasions authorities shun action against those involved in wildlife crimes due to fear of local politicians, activist who do not care for our wilderness at all and yes the local thugs active in that region. In absence of protective umbrella from higher authorities lower staff is easily dominated by negative factors described here.  Political interference is at its peak in India, and some in power literally act as fascists. They have to be kept within the limits of their stipulated powers.

In case of high valued trophies such as rhinos and tigers there is immense incentive to poach as they fetch a large price in the local and International markets. The poachers and smuggles are in total total disregard  of the laws shaped within the constitutional framework. Some of them are well trained and equipped with modern weapons and do not hesitate to kill those responsible for the protection of precious wildlife.

The laws for protection of wildlife are lacking and provide easy maneuverability in the legal process due to plethora of lacunae and a system corrupt and inefficient. The cases take too long a time to come to a decision. All the factors pointed out here encourage poachers to go about their nefarious activities with impunity. Studying the tiger electrocution incidents at the hands of poachers will be a revelation for those interested in this matter.

Species are being lost and whence the legal framework fails to punish and prevent it leaves no recourse but to go the hard way. Wildlife crimes lead to a vast network of International mafias which facilitate heinous crimes like terrorism and drug smuggling. If strong measures are not taken with strong will we will lose our environment as well allow loopholes used by the nexus that will be detrimental to our National security. The die is cast save the environment in totality or perish.

Where Are The Candles?

The dastardly attack on the pious returning from Amarnath Yatra has shocked the Nation. Killing of innocent people has always been a modus operandi of the terrorists, in this case operating at the behest of the enemy in order to fulfill its nefarious design.

Albeit this is not an attack on minorities by the extreme right and the zealots which is a grave wrong anyway or perceived as a larger issue hence does not call for a National awakening (to many) in forms of wide scale protests or candle marches. But it does call for a voluminous expression.

If we fail to condemn forcefully then we indirectly justify horrific actions of those who kill the innocent with impunity. This  should be irrespective of caste creed or ethnicity of the victims.  Even if this does not trigger a reaction on larger scale we the people should express sympathy for the victims or anger against the perpetrators in order to voice against the heinous act, and simultaneously stress National solidarity.

The cowardly attack should be mourned at the loss of citizens of our country. Or are our lives come that cheap that here too chlata hai attitude applies.

As a matter of fact those ignoring the majority aspects are indirectly justifying the attitude of the extreme right and encouraging religious autocracy in the country. A rational and balanced approach is required by those at the forefront. There are the pseudo intellectuals who ignore these facts which could result in a negative fall out, but do come out to bask in the limelight of whatever seems productive to them.

That this dastardly attack on women and children does not bring ill repute to Kashmiriyat which is pluralistic in nature. In fact Kashmiris play a major supporting role during the Yatra.

Extinction Underway - Can We Save The Earth?

We have constantly failed to prevent extinction of species since modern civilization took roots. The reason being that nature often comes in the way of  economic urgency. The shape of our economy in modern times is much dependent upon industrialization, agriculture and our own consumption based lifestyle that does not conform to salient principles of rational resource management.

Let's invoke the truth, human prerogative dominates all forms of life on Earth. The extermination of wildlife accelerated whence the gun came into the picture. Earlier times hunting was not a passion, it was at many places where agriculture was lacking a deemed necessity. The vermin concept proved deadly and brought many species to brink of extinction if not their complete annihilation.

The modern day hunting, and the rapid loss of wild species was further compounded by uncontrolled population growth. The expanding humanity ravaged all habitats that came its way from grasslands, rivers to dense forests. There was no place for natural inhabitants to go and they perished. This was done to make way for agricultural fields especially in countries like India and China, food was a major priority to feed its teeming millions - and ever growing. Damage done, the rot continued as industrialization made its appearance. In many countries there was extreme loss of habitat and complete extermination of wildlife.

To be fair it was not only rampant hunting and habitat destruction that completely wiped out many species on Earth a major factor that was responsible for this irreversible loss was our lack of understanding as to how ecosystems of Earth work. This gave rise to many fallacies like not giving importance to habitats and  preventing their destruction. It takes millions of years to create ecosystems which made life on Earth sustainable.

Tree felling was done to appease our uncontrollable appetite for wood, and then  commercial forestry in nascent stage added to the great loss. Even till this day our green lungs are being felled because many countries in South America and some parts of Asia are totally dependent upon wood for their economic survival. The remaining forest ecosystems are under severe threat.

The resultant disorder that already prevails thanks to consumption of fossil fuel will be worsened if nothing is done to stem the rot. Eventually climate change due to emission of warm gases will consume us, well if not now then in time to come. Our progeny will definitely pay the price for our follies. The effects are already being felt and in many places, the rising temperature and frequent weather disturbances have started to take a toll.

Nevertheless we continue to pursue industrial policies and developmental goals that are taking a heavy toll of nature. The obsession with rapid economic growth can be understood but what is alarming is that we manage to circumvent  the concern that arises out of  resultant damage to the environment in the process. Our policy makers, the wise men are always able to justify damage to the environment that arises due to developmental agenda. Who cares? Well some people do. But their voice is lost in the vast milieu that comprises of greed filled people and those in the race for attaining economic goals.

We are held for ransom in absence of sound developmental policies which may take their own time to emerge but this is an antithesis for quick economic resurgences. Sane innovative ideas and practices develop over a period of time if the pursuits are sincere; they would in turn mitigate the damage to  our environment. But who gives new emerging  paradigm the weighted consideration.

According to the report in The Guardian UK scientist warn that the sixth mass extinction is already under way. Already the space for existence of many keystone species  is constricted. In absence of effective conservation efforts and proper planning many more species are bound to become extinct in time to come.

Public apathy, greed and mismanagement will hinder all actions that could stem the rot.  The species are becoming extinct at much faster rate than before. After already having lost billions of life forms  environmental concerns should be widespread prevalent, that which along with sound policies will continue to make the Earth a livable place.

The Power of Festivities

Sharing The Joy in Festive Celebrations

Apart from bringing extreme joy and happiness festivals in all colors cement relationship. They augur a new beginning, for some they may be auspicious for entrepreneurship, for some it is time for social bindings while many make most of the opportune moment for self realization to do well in all aspect of life. For some it is time for condescension for some it is reaffirming of belief and spiritual awakening for some it is time to express grief and gain strength.

It is time to forgo and forgive, refresh and rejuvenate.  Let bygones be bygones!

Festivities contain diverse ambiance but central to it all is to nurture and preserve humanity. Simply spreading warmth is key to happiness and making others feel good.

This is the time to let go chauvinism and intolerance. Remove hate, jealousy and discrimination. Diversity will prevail!

Wow! & Vows go together and for good. Festive resolutions shape many characters. This is the time to empower self with honesty and rectitude. The warmth and gaiety augurs miraculous hope to the ailing and the depressed. Festivities are time for giving and realising the joy of giving. Acceptance, appreciation and sharing the diverse ecosystem we thrive in is crucial for our own well being.

As a naturalist I understand diversity of life - human and of other life forms - it fetches nothing but extreme joy and faith in our beloved World.

Celebrate humanity and nature we have inherited with positive mind. The End of  The World is nowhere near.

Non Traditional Energy Our Last Recourse

While the Paris Accord tamasha goes on with Trump's withdrawal from the crucial agreement. US with promise of major cut of co2 emissions was seen as a key player in the success of the agreement.

The Trump policies portray a regressive move back to increased production and use of traditional fossil fuels.

What will be the outcome of this betrayal it is too early to predict. Leaving US all other countries that have ratified are bound by the accord - a salient promise to bring down by their own contribution the disastrous phenomena of global warming. The aim is to bring down the rising global temperatures to below the pre industrial era levels.

We all know the consequences of global warming but what would be fate of the World if it is not controlled.

It all started with wood as fuel and large tracts of forests where eventually denuded. Extensive deforestation took place in some quarters during the medieval period resulting in shortage of wood for fuel. Coal emerged as a saviour for nations starved of energy. Animal products used as fuel were a limited stop gap arrangements and environmentally disastrous.

Discovery of petroleum was a major turnaround as a source of energy. Coal, petroleum and natural gas brought around transformation that appeared to be everlasting with seemingly an inexhaustible  supply. Well though we are still dependant upon these fossil fuels for our energy needs, the stocks are not inexhaustible. Worst is the after effect of these products as source of energy. The production of fuel guzzling cars should be limited and more environment friendly version the electric car should dominate the scene as early as possible.

Extensive mining for coal like other commodities results in large scale destruction of environment. So does the drilling of crude which is mostly found in the sea & desert lands with little forest cover. Carbon dioxide emissions are the major threat to our climate and we have already started noting their negative impacts globally.

Mitigate our carbon footprint or perish this could be end of the World we are waiting for. Well time is at our hand to rectify and restrain global warming to its minimum.

Albeit there has been a search  for alternative energy sources like ethanol, hydroelectric, geothermal and renewable energy from wind and Sun, the reliability on fossil fuels does nowhere seem to have diminished yet

Countries sincere in reducing Co2 emissions are developing alternative means of generating energy. The most popular form of energy generation is the renewable form. Here impact on environment is practically negligible and there is no depletion of resource taking place.  Solar and Wind power generation are the most desired forms and are being harnessed.

Another form of generation considered to be clean and having no impact on the environment is nuclear energy but then this is mired in controversy. Anyhow countries are resorting to nuclear energy generation within their capacities.

Bringing down the cost of  installation of  wind turbines and solar panels is of utmost importance if we have to generate renewable energy in a big way. Technological strides are already taking place, but the cost is still prohibitive for widespread implementation. Large solar farms and windmills are being installed in order to generate forty percent of energy via such means in India

Ever country will have to do their bit if they wish the Earth to remain inhabitable for future generation accord or no accord.

Provocation Politics A Dangerous Trend

Whenever there is an act of dissent, protest or related activity, political provocation surfaces. This is a politics of rank opportunism. The provocateurs hardly lose as they remain anonymous or slip incognito.  The eventual sufferers are the participants - usually indulging peacefully before instigation. The protests erupt vis-a-vis unfulfilled demand, local tragedy such as accident, natural disaster and often police high handedness.

Albeit such acts have often been resorted to earlier of  late these provocations have become a tad too common. The provocation begins with the arrival of the members of a political party belonging to the opposition. This is done primarily to express sympathy. Instigation follows which often leads to extreme violence. If this is not the case  irrational opinion mongering or vocal support is vociferously propagated in the media - a popular tool.

The former leads to violence and death of those involved, and could also result in rioting on a large scale leading to killings and pillage. Public property, small commercial establishments and residents of the poor are subject to destruction. In case of latter, seditious elements get encouragement from unfettered support to their anti-National ideology or rantings on guise of freedom of speech. The long term impact of such support could encourage sedition as well proclivity towards anti National activities leading to terrorism, insurgency and what not.

Are we witnessing a change in political culture in India?  Is the political paradigm taking a virulent form?

Many incidents in recent times stand as testimony to the changing scenario. The country needs strong opposition parties that keep a check on any over the board activities and policies of those in the helm that go against the salient principles of our constitution.  Far from providing mature opposition most of the political parties in India are resorting to small means and obfuscated rantings. And to make matters worse there is no dearth of fifth columnist in this country - so it seems.

The actions speak of gross insensitivity towards the people.  Political popularity arises out of actions that discourage wrong doings and promise of sane, efficient meaningful governance. Indian voters are not a gullible mass and the election results speak lot about this fact. Crying wolf in not going to help. An issue does not draw attention from violence that dissent generates but through much peaceful means of addressing it.

Mahatma Gandhi has already shown us the right approach, that is what we should keep in  mind whence dealing with contentious issues. Good governance should be appreciated while the negative should be opposed by peaceful means. Violence and aggression are deep seated  malaise that we should do away with. They augur nothing but have dangerous ramifications.

The opposition has a vital role to play in Nation building. The is the best recourse that the parliamentary system accords us with. We should refrain from activities that point towards the subversive. Power is not a piece of cake that can be attained by just any means, winning votes through rightful approach is the way.

Cultural & Social Regression

India is a democracy and the largest one at that. The secular and liberal ideals are stipulated in our beloved constitution. Nevertheless there are cries of regression that emanate because of the polity leaning on Hindutva. Being a State with large Hindu majority influence of the Vedas and Hindu religious values are bound to surface. Moreso after brutal repression by Arab and British imperialism. We were suppressed for centuries. But these influences do not diminish secular ideals. Hinduism is a religion of largesse with plenty of space for others - as our past confirms. Different religions, cults and ideologies survive and flourish with aplomb.

Earlier the ruling parties did stick to secular ideals but at the same time could not accord breathing space to the majority. The debacle at the ballot box was obvious, it was worsened by the opinions and rantings of so called spokespersons of the opposition that appeared to be as appeasing the minorities. This did not go down well with the minorities as they were already nurturing an impression of being used as scapegoats/vote banks in State politics. Voters irrespective of their religious credentials do not vote in unison because of the diversity and differences that prevails among the followers. This however is not applicable in parochial and caste based politics and exploitation is the norm.

There was an impression of neglect from earlier Governments among the Hindus - liberal and secular down to core. They felt their religious exigencies were being sidelined, and their identity threatened by the over the board leanings. In a democracy there is nothing better than the results themselves. They expose the right and wrong practices, propaganda and perceptions. These are invoked among the intelligent voters by the noise - illogical and extreme.

In the present context everything which has Hindu color (of majority) is labeled as non secular and oppressing the minority interest.  This is not true. Hindu majority understands the significance of secularism and hence the preservation of a multipolar & multicultural society in the contemporary era. There is no demand for a theocratic state since the citizens belief lies in the salient principles of the constitution of India. Demand does arise for a Hindu State from a handful but that goes down the drain as being totally impractical.  The homogenised entity is not possible in India with the mind boggling diversity that prevails - religious, ethnic and linguistic.

Another factor that does not encourage theocratic notions is the impression such States carry as example. Social and cultural regression in such societies are the norm which result in chaos and hinder progress. This is due to constricted thinking that results from abject ideological fascination that is impractical in contemporary times. The use of force through draconian laws label such Government as those professing fascism apart from being puritanical and sticking to regressive religious ideologues. In such States the status of women and minorities is in dire straits with scarce or no recourse to judicial protection.

There is a thin line that demarcates good governance from bad. The rule should be kept shorn of meaningless noise that emanates from chauvinism, bans, vigilantism, lynching, social and cultural regression. Going overboard with religious zeal may result in rejection by the masses. Puritanical and extreme ideological approach will not be favoured by the citizens. Whoever comes to power in this country has to trudge with extreme caution. India will stay as a liberal, secular and multicultural society with a modern approach.

Agrarian Vicissitudes & Farmers Woes

The recent happenings related to farmers agitation in Mandsaur and neighboring Maharashtra speak much of the difficulties being faced by farmers in various parts of India. The main issue it seems was support prices fixed by the Government for the crops. But as always this community is facing many problems and concomitantly related issues arise up as well during such events. Though the present Government has tried to fulfill their legislative priorities regarding this matter the agitation is an indicator that much more has to be done.

In face of adverse situation all the past political rhetoric and promises come to naught and rank political opportunism acts as fuel for raging blaze. A political color has been accorded to the agitation and there have been instances of instigation by opposition parties as per TV reports.

Out of the context but prospective political parties and politicians should count on the ability to provide good governance rather then limit themselves to being noise makers. With the death of some protestors the agitation  turned violent and spread to neighboring districts.

India is an agrarian economy with more than half of its population living in villages which is dependant totally upon agriculture as means of survival. To make matters worse most of the land holding in India is divided amongst large families with each eventually holding small piece of arable land.

Even large land holdings in absence use of micro fertilizers and rampant use of chemical fertilizers like urea have had a disastrous impact reducing soil fertility in some regions. Dependency on monsoon rains which if insufficient can result in failure of the crops. The country has a large infrastructure for field irrigation but it caters only to one third of area.

For small farmers the scale of economy is often unviable and hence susceptible to many vagaries that make the industry subject to frequent failures. This is the reason behind the losses farmers incur especially those with small capital base. They are frequently encumbered with loans they are in no position to pay back. This travesty has resulted in continuous spate of suicides in many places in India.

In spite of induction of modern technologies and techniques the problem relating to the income of farmers in India persist. The production economy is not bound by the high or low yield of crops alone the distribution network, storage, transportation, middlemen nexus and unstable pricing all contribute to the downfall now and then.

The problem is further compounded by associated inadequacies like availability of seed,  some variety of which are exorbitantly priced. Albeit the formation of organizations like NSC & SFCI along with State seed corporations helped in supply of improved seed variety but for poor farmers procurement problem remain. Anyway in general conditions are improving in this matter.

In case or manure and fertilization procurement problems of poor farmers remain. Cow dung is an alternative but more is used in rural kitchens thus limiting the option.  Germs weeds and pests are a persistent problems that farmers face.   Biocides are required in large quantities to curb the menace but indiscriminate usage  results in environmental pollution  and risk to human health.

Most of the farming in the country is labour oriented in absence of mechanisation. This results in increased labor costs in low yield fields, and waste of labor force as well.  For efficient and timely production, mechanization is required on larger scale.  Infrastructure for development of machines and equipment is on increase but we have a long way to go.

In order to avoid distress sales a sound marketing mechanism and adequate storage facilities are required. Heavy dependence on middlemen, money lenders and local traders results in low profitability for small farmers especially in case of those indebted. Hence easy availability of loans at lower rate of interest is the order of the day. Availability of capital on easy turns with less stressful repayment systems is a must if the small farmers have to see betters days in India.

According Voice to the Wrong Ones

Comparing our Army Chief with General Dyer is an instance of a perfidious mindset. The comparison reeks of pseudo-intellectual leaning of a person who it seems does not understand history, and is happy with a deliberate twist of facts which will turnout to be sensational news just as intended.

Such remarks are deeds of abject folly. No person died when a man was tied to the jeep in Kashmir. The officer was merely preventing conflagaration of the situation in whatever way he deemed fit without bloodshed taking place. In a violent situations the security men do not like to take action that would lead to large number of deaths, but then they have to take an action which would discourage the rioters and augur peace.

What one thinks of the action is a different matter and many have voiced their opinion without fear. But here the comparison is what is absolutely absurd. It should be remembered that Dyer was responsible for hundreds of deaths. The said person is comparing a mountain with a molehill if the latter could be referred as that at all.

Anyway India does not subscribe to demonic means of suppressing dissent, the Nation counters it in a civilized manner. Look at the separatists their voice has not been brutally silenced. It is a way forward since dissent or voice of opposition is part of a robust democracy, and those at the helm are accountable for a clean governance. But then there is a thin line that separates dissent or difference of opinion from sedition. Comparing our Army Chief with General Dyer of Amritsar Carnage could have security implications.

Our immensely popular media  is a voice that does not fail to highlight the going on. But then it has to be careful especially about instances that give rise to jingoistic fervor. In their haste they may end up promoting an instance created by a person with wrongful intent for coming into limelight. The media has tremendous reach pan India and globally, and this could be used as a tool on the sly by subversive elements and for sending a wrong message or for self promotion. Dissenters or critics going overboard should never get publicity which could lead to instant recognition for these foul mouths. A news is a news and it should be kept that way.

Empowered Economy Digital & Cashless

Digital India Program is an effort of the Government  to empower and establish a digital society that is cashless and hence paperless. The flagship program aims to augur a knowledge based economy that will keep in accordance with developed World.  Albeit an effort in the right direction, it is by all means of Herculean nature.

In order to implement a technology familiarisation of which is based on advance learning - amongst the masses - a pragmatic approach is required. We have to first understand the structural profile that the country embeds in its folds. The major aspect that makes implement of  advance technologies successful is the demographic ease with which it is adopted.

Our adult literacy stands at 74 percent which is far below that of the developed World. With World's largest illiterate populace adapting to new hitherto unknown means of financial transactions would be in the present context difficult. In order to bring in a positive demographic transition vis-a-vis education we have a long way to go.

But then it is now or never for digitisation of National economy. Hence encouraging the new mode by discouraging old financial dispensations through innovative campaigns is a must.

It is not only literacy that matters, adaptation to a new environment faces hurdles due to a stagnant mindset that prevails in a deeply tradition bound society. In India not only the corrupt but the honest as well are immensely habituated to cash based systems since ages.

In order to stem the rot and obliterate corrupt practices digital technology appears to be at the forefront. But than do the masses feel at home with it? How quickly will we adapt to the digitised mode of financial transactions?

Another major hindrance is the communication infrastructure that prevails in the country. In order to digitise, an efficient and foolproof communication system is the need of the hour. Accessibly to high speed low cost Internet with pan India spread is an imperative. The infrastructure albeit improving is far from adequate.

Take the example of ATM machines and their upkeep. Frequent breakdowns, lethargic cash management and accessibility are the key factors that riddles smooth flow of cash. The supporting factors like electricity, transportation and saturation of  machines are severely lacking especially in remote settlements. Understanding new often app based technologies like online payment gateways, e wallets and other modes of cashless transaction will take loads of time. Hence integration of masses with these systems is time bound not immediate. Thankfully old systems have not been discontinued hence alternate familiar means are there to facilitate individual needs.

The crucial banking sector is exhibiting hiccups in adapting to the new environment. Most of the employees are slow to adapt, hence encumbering the organization with additional training inputs.

The problem is further  compounded by the fact that disproportionately large habitation in India is rural and remote, and that too dependant on an agrarian economy. Most of the inequities like illiteracy, poverty and a stagnant economy dependaning solely on the monsoon are found amongst the rural segment. Severely lacking in infrastructure development regards basic necessity; the rural segment suffers from vast economic disparities as well.

On the contrary the most of the advance technologies are highly urban centric. How the rural segment copes with this new transition only time will tell. One positive factor I have come to notice is the ease with which people have adapted to wireless telephony (read mobile), but the lack of Internet kiosks and their popularity is not at all encouraging. Look we are trying to implement a system which is popular in homogenous, tech savvy and highly literate populace of the developed World. These attributes do not apply to our country with diverse demography, loads of illiteracy and comparatively small segment of tech savvy populace.

Breaking the norm in an ecosystem that flourishes on cash is not an easy task. Nevertheless the programme has to go ahead if we have get rid of the old system that to a great extent facilitates tax evasion, subversive activities as well as encumbers the banking system in time of automation with extra manpower.

Empowering Women

MP Government Initiatives

As per recent newspaper reports the Government of Madhya Pradesh has accorded significant concessions for women working in its institutions and public concerns. These concessions are in order to counter negative approach towards women in India. Under MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan a number of steps have been taken to mitigate this deep routed malaise prevailing in our society.  The campaign and schemes hope to stem the rot and also to improve female to male child ratio which is unbalanced due low number of female births in Central India.

Beti Bachao Abhiyan (Save & Educate the girl child) is an effort that stands out as hallmark development in order to erase or mitigate the social evil that is lurking amidst us, and speaks a lot about gender inequality. These campaigns are not only to empower women economically but also to emancipate them from years of drudgery as a result of social prejudices and male prerogatives. For change in attitude and proper education are the ways to achieve emancipation as envisaged in these campaigns.

Another scheme worth a mention is Ladli Laxmi Yojna. The main objective of this scheme is to improve the health and education status of the girl child as well as to remove prejudices against the girl child.

Gender Inequality

This harrowing instance attributed to pervasive mindset is deep rooted and has led to number of infant deaths due to heinous crimes and neglect. Throughout the recent history the girl child has been the sufferer. This has resulted in physical neglect and even persecution of the unfortunate child born as a female. Another reason that labels girl child as a liability is the social cost that arises out of inclination for dowry and marriage expenses. The former is a crime and the latter is unfavorably loaded on the girl's family. Till this day even among many educated families only the male progeny is the center of care and attention. This attitude is adopted brazenly or subtly but anyway it points to a deep seated prejudice.

Superior status accorded to the male gene is widespread prevalent within the society consciously or unconsciously. We simply refuse to accept that a girl child augurs family genes. This misconception will take a large timespan to erode. This will require drastic change in our thoughts, reassessment of value systems and lot of acceptance as far as correcting the gender inequality tilt prevailing amongst us. The disbalance is further accentuated by labeling the opposite sex as physically and socially weaker. This has led to the inferior status. This notion has significantly reduced the leadership or participatory role that could have been accorded to women in nation building.

For centuries women have been the sufferers as a result of such tilted inclinations. Some of the bias is prevalent in many countries as well - especially the underdeveloped ones and many theocratic states.

The superiority accorded to male gender is based on number of  misguided notions that has roots in our beliefs, the social structure, economic perceptions and to some extant history. Women have always been considered as inferior to men and are meant to do household chores, oblige men in number of ways and be servile. Economic dependency and lower social status are some of the major reasons that has resulted in suppression of women in India. The inequality that stems out from the misconceptions have incarcerated women further leading to lack of freedom both economic and social.

Historically women have been subject to extreme exploitation, rape during conquests and enslavement that  has wrongfully justified their status as an object of possession and a matter of honour. As a result practice like Sati originated in India. Though this statement may appear harsh but then it is a fact. Read history, the reawakening will widen scope of vision favourably if it brings forth the realization that we have not accorded an equal status to the opposite sex since time immemorial.

Blame it on mindset, socio-religious values or historical perception this malaise in our society has to be uprooted fast and proper if we have to shine as a developed nation.

Good Behaviour Doth A Country Make

The recent incidence of stolen headphones, pilferage and damage on Tejas Express accounts much for some of our peoples wretched behavioral characteristics. This is nothing new and it came up as expected. All the premium facilities provided for good of the public were subject to damage, soiling toilets and littering apart from theft.  One of the most modern assemblage, travel on Tejas Express should have been a matter of pride for those onboard.

These acts make a sordid statement of who we are and how we behave. (Well not all). To make matters worse there is no dearth of related incidences making some of us a misbehaved lot in the global sphere.

As citizens of a country who never fail to boast of a golden past and a vibrant culture our behaviour at times is paradoxically opposite to what we try to impress. On instances some  acts abroad are not impressive as well. For every Indian who travels abroad carries on its shoulders the onus of projecting a positive image of the country.

Frequent bandhs, eve teasing, rapes, gender inequality, religious intolerance, riots, parochialism, the news travel fast in the international arena labeling us as uncivil or calling for severe travel warnings. These attributes are responsible of low number of overseas visitors and hence loss of crucial foreign exchange. These acts are antithesis for campaigns like Make in India.

Do we project a pervasive National character?  Certainly not! Leaving the rotten apples aside we have immense pride in our heritage. .

Jumping queues, rowdiness, traffic violations and littering are few negative attributes that we as Indians are often blamed for. Open defecation and urination, spitting are some of the banal virtues that fetch defame. Some of us often disregard honesty, cleanliness, punctuality and good manners instinctively.

Do these behavioural characteristics arise due to oppression, deprivation, immoral values or profound disregard for civic behaviour?   To what extent we as citizens of India are responsible?

Well this is for each individual to answer depending upon his or her attitude.

In the global sphere our fake pride does not hold forth as the word goes around. I have witnessed on upteen occasions overseas visitors politely ignoring these follies or not going beyond a mild snigger. It is not that these banal virtues are not present in other countries but on most instances they are restricted to mentally deranged and those pertaining to criminal dispensation.

Public behaviour is exemplary in many countries as the propaganda machinery informs us. Why do we not follow suit? Is there something lacking in some of us that makes them behave in an undignified manner at times. Do we lack proper education or cultural ethos that make some of us go banal? None of these. Or is there a complete lack of expression of disgust on acts of folly from our compatriots?

This chalta hai attitude is not going to take us far. Exemplary display of honesty, good mannerism and civic behaviour is the need of the hour. A country depends upon the character of its citizens if it has to develop progress and shine,

Should we not strive to change?

Has Salem Witch Trials Begun In India

Salem Witch Trials

This was a trail against people supposedly practicing witchcraft in USA.  This was in the 17th century at Massachusetts to be precise.  The trial resulted in execution, hanging and death of many people supposedly practising witchcraft.

Salem witch trial was example of Colonial America's mass hysteria.  The witch trials had taken place earlier too; and this phenomena occurred in Europe as well. Upon further reading, I discovered that these trials were the foundation of a secular America and theocracy as such was weakened.  What a paradox.

Lynching, false allegations, intolerance, mass killings and so on can without hesitation be attributed to overzealous religious elements.  This is new to India, with cases of lynching over cow taking place quiet frequently...this phenomena exists in other countries...in extreme at many.

This comes about with sudden religious revivalism, especially in countries where rulers ascribe to beliefs of the majority. This heartless attitude comes about due to feeling of past persecution or insecurity. This is the creation of political goons as well as the fanatical clerics bent upon seeing things through a blasphemous prism  or ascribing it all to desecration of the holy as in the case of lynching in India.

This is further exacerbated by the failure of the law and order machinery, and myopia that the some of state bodies suffer from.

Ignominy and shame are then heaped upon the Nation in global ecosystem.

This is the price a pluralistic country will pay if religion encroaches upon governance. Let religion be a private affair practised in peace in an atmosphere of absolute harmony.

Ban Culture! Where Does The Buck Stop?

Are we becoming a totalitarian state?

If not. Is the governance becoming autocratic? Thankfully in a vibrant democracy with reactive media and aggressive electorate this is a far fetched idea.

Prohibition in Bihar has further promoted the ban culture in India. After Gujarat, Kerala, Bihar, Manipur, Mizoram, Tamilnadu, Nagaland and Lakshadweep, and now Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh to follow suit. The prohibition applicable in these States is partial or total.

With the rise in puritanism, the country will be facing stifling of liberal/recreational culture some obviously on pretext of curbing western cultural influence in India. Well if puritanism or ideology is a way of life, then lifestyles which advocate a more liberal attitude towards certain acceptable social mores and pleasures  is also a way of life...as long as it does not impinge on the interest of others or the State.

That people believe in a certain ideals and way of life is well understood but this does not mean it should be forcefully imposed on others. To be told what to eat, listen, see, drink, or wear is regressive by all means. A straightforward ban is stifling. A regulatory approach should be in place.

There is a thin line that separates authoritarianism from good governance.

"Chronic or excessive alcohol consumption is certainly bad and as such it can be an insurmountable challenge for the society."

Shouldn't it be that the menace be curbed by creating awareness, moral persuasion or by use of some other means rather than bring about a total ban. Already alcohol use is a stigma amongst many in India.

Smoking is being discouraged through high cost, restriction and propoganda,  a palpable reduction in the act has come into place. Why not alcohol? If the use of intoxicants is going over board than it is the right policy to make the availability restricted.

That alcohol use will come to an end post ban is chimerical indulgence. Illegal business (bootlegging), illicit brewing and hence illegal consumption will engulf even those who consume in moderation and make them criminal participant. Even wine and beer with low alcohol content will not be spared.

Illegal distilling will certainly increase the chances of people dying because of poisoning. In some instances indulgence in intoxicating drugs may rise.

May be the underground machinery is already gearing up to the new opportunity. This means rise of criminal nexus between the smugglers, hoarders, suppliers and the consumers. Connivance of corrupt elements within the police in these activities cannot be ruled out. Political connivance cannot be ruled out as well.  The channels once in place will act as a conduit for greater criminal activities.

As per reports unhindered availability of alcohol via different channels in states professing prohibition should be an eye opener. Ban is clearly not the answer.

The act of ban on consumption and manufacture is suggestive of a stunted mechanism devoid of out of the box solutions.  For outsiders ban culture is suggestive of being against the ethos of a free state and could deter tourism and investment.

Coming back to prohibition, this has been imposed in other states as well, but it has been subsequently repealed indicating a confused  paradigm. Same is the case of countries across the globe.

In India there are many laws besides the high cost that regulate alcohol consumption, drunk driving rules, restriction on consumption in public places, licensing and monitoring, age limit, dry days, elections, condition of sale etc.

The liquor policies are State subject as per the schedule seventh  of the Constitution of India.
